Second Grade
Ms. Walsh's Class Page (awalsh@stbeatriceschool.com)
I am very happy to be teaching at St. Beatrice this year. There are a few things that I would like to share with you:
Homework
There will be math and spelling homework each night. If your child has extra homework in their folders, it needs to be completed with their homework for that evening and returned to me in the morning. A student may have extra homework when they do not complete the in-class assignment during the given time. All homework will be collected in the morning. Assignments will be returned to the students who have incorrect answers and specific problems will need to be redone. If your child does not have their homework they will sit out during free time and be expected to complete the assignment that evening along with their other work. A lunchtime detention will be given if your child misses two assignments in the same week. If, for some reason, your child cannot complete the homework, please write and note and free time will not be taken away. A list of our spelling words for the week will be sent home every Monday. We will have a spelling test on Friday.
Reading
Each student needs a book to read each day. Althought we have many wonderful books in our classroom library, I encourage the students to bring books from home to keep in their desks. Book report forms will be given the first and third Friday of every month beginning October 5th. Students wil have 10 days to complete each book report. The books may be chapter books or picture books.
Classroom Rules
The first week of school, I discussed with the class our rules. When a student chooses to distract another by talking they receive a warning. Part of free time is taken away as a second consequence. All of free time is taken away as a third consequence. The student will receive time-out at lunchtime recess as a fourth consequence or if talking continues on a routine basis. An after school detention will be given for continued disruption of class
Student Goals
During the course of the year students will work on meeting four goals. These goals will guide the students through their second grade year, preparing them for third grade.
1. Stay focused on individual and whole group assignments.
2. Complete all homework assignments.
3. Work neatly on classroom and home assigments.
4. Be kind to classmates and include them in recess activities.
At the end of each day I will ask students to think about their day to see if they have met their goals. I encourage students to discuss their day at home.
Special Classes
Students will participate in special classes: Computer and Physical Education will be twice a week. Music and Art will be once a week. Your child will participate in P.E. on Monday and Wednesday.
Please call me before or after school if you have any questions or concerns during the year. I am very much looking forward to this new year!
